KARR AM, 1460 kHz, and an associated translator on 98.5 MHz, cover a limited geographical area east of Metropolitan Seattle. This is an affluent, high-tech area with a high density of HD Radio-equipped cars. To reach this market, it was decided to provide a broadcast facility with high quality digitally optimized programming. Recent broadcast technology and FCC allows an all-digital delivery system to reach the HD equipped listener. To reach this tech savvy audience, it was decided to take advantage of the recent developments of the AM HD radio technology combined with HD FM. Further developments with in-car HD receivers facilitate wireless reception and the ability to switch from over-the-air reception to wireless stream and recent deployment of robust 5G networks. Future in car media will likely include ATSC 3.0 capable receivers. The station is in the process of contracting with a local ATSC 3.0 equipped transmission system for a sub-channel for the station’s audio and data transmission. The station is also evaluating the possibility of all-digital FM.
